E. Bercovich and Son

Edward Bercovich opened the furniture store in basement of building at 4th and Alice St. in downtown Oakland on April 18, 1906, the day of the great earthquake in San Francisco.  Other locations of the store included 7th and Franklin St, 11th and Clay St. and 13th and Clay St.  Three sons included Albert, Harry and youngest Sam, who is now 98 (2014).  Store closed its doors in 1980.

Among the major league players from Oakland who got their start with Bercovich team were Frank Robinson, Veda Pinson, Curt Flood, Jackie Jensen and Tommy Harper.  One of players from that era credited Sam Bercovich as having changed his life... "he took a switch blade out of my hand and put a baseball bat in it."
