Area: Colusa (Maxwell)
Year: 1935
Description: Photograph taken in 1935 of Red and White Grocery store building.
The Red and White grocery store was owned by L.L. (Bill) Barrett from about 1928 until 1949 and was the main store in town. The building is still there although no longer occupied. It was built in the late 1800's and called the Union Hall. The Masonic Lodge was on the top floor and Barrett's store was below. Population of Maxwell in 2011 is about the same (approx. 1200) as when the store was operating, but it is noteworthy that there are no longer any grocery stores in town.
